deeply concerned about water availability in the world, in California and in his hometown of Soquel, near Santa Cruz. It is the most important life and death issue worldwide and in many third world countries, women spend hours each day carrying water jugs – and the water is unsafe and there are no sanitary facilities to prevent disease.

Although the situation in Soquel does not compare to parts of Africa, the situation is dire. Between 1960 and 2000, the US water consumption doubled but the amount of available water stayed the same.

In Haiti, after the earthquake, there was water to drink but no toilets or showers. And cholera broke out as a result.

And in the US, even where there is plenty of cheap, safe water, people don’t drink enough. In the US, the average person uses 180 gallons of water a day, mostly in the bathroom and toilet. In recent years, toilet tanks have gotten smaller, which has saved much water. There are also now “two-flush” toilets that use more or less water depending on what is being flushed.

Ron does not believe in sink garbage disposals.

There are inventions coming out that use recycled shower water for the first phase of a laundry load, and then recycled the rinse water to the lawn. This was just legalized in California.

Ron also advocates getting rid of lawns. The average California sprinkles five feet of water a year on their lawn.

Ground water in the US is dropping rapidly and not being recharged. People don’t tend to worry about it because they can’t see it.

Other tips – hand water your lawn. 50% of sprinkler water evaporates. Or try native cover plants (weeds) instead of grass.

Non-water (incineration) toilets are coming!

Phillippe Coustaeu and the World's Oceans

Philippe Cousteau, Jr. is based in Washington, DC as co-founder of EarthEcho International.

Philippe Cousteau, Junior, is the son of Philippe Cousteau, Senior, and the grandson of famed oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Philippe, Jr. was born in 1979, the same year his father died in a boat crash. With his sister, he is co-founder of EarthEcho International, which produces educational programs about oceans and the environment.

Sharon asked what is the most important educational message his group is trying to get across. Philippe stated, as Sharon often does, that the oceans are the source of all life on the planet since fresh water ultimately comes from the oceans. He said that we must be aware that everything we do and every lifestyle choice we make effects the ecosystem. We therefore must live so that our impact is positive. Regarding water, we cannot live without it (although we can live without petroleum). Sadly, people tend to forget this. Unlike drinking water, the oceans are often out of sight and people tend not to think about them. But they must be protected if we are going to protect our fresh water.

Sharon asked about bell-weather endangered species and Philippe mentioned the leatherback sea turtle, which is endangered from unsustainable fishing with huge nets, the poaching of its eggs as a delicacy, beachfront development, etc. They can be saved but they tend to migrate huge distances (California to Japan), so considerable international cooperation would be required.

Are the oceans warming? Philippe says yes, especially in the tropics, which is causing great problems with the health of coral reefs, a source of marine life. Climate change in the last 150 years has never been so rapid. The oceans absorb about 50% of human carbon emissions in the air but they cannot keep this up indefinitely. The result is oceanic acidification, which makes it difficult for shellfish and mollusks to build shells. Since these creatures are mostly at or near the bottom of the food chain, the reverberations are huge (whales eat a tiny shrimp called "krill" almost exclusively).

Polluted fresh water that enters the ocean is also a problem. The amount of fresh water on Earth is finite but the population is growing so it is more important than ever to protect our fresh water. One person in five on Earth lives in an area with inadequate fresh water and 7% of all urban deaths trace to pollution.

Sharon asked about the economic environment, which is currently very negative. Philippe pointed out that his grandfather, while gravely concerned about the environment, got people to listen to him because he always maintained a positive attitude. A positive attitude is always helpful.

There was some discussion about the symbolism of the tides, representing the "breathing" of the Earth and suggesting that the oceans are a living organism and not stagnant. It was also noted that 70% of the earth's surface is water and 70% of the human body is also water. The Federal budget for oceanic research is 1/1,000th that of the budget for space research.

More water facts: Each cell of the human body requires water. The average urban drinking water has been recycled seven times. The oceans are the primary source of moisture in the air, which is why most people find being near the ocean so relaxing.

Final words: The most important mission of organizations such as Earth Echo is to empower the next generations of environmental leaders.

For more information, go to www.EarthEcho.org. Earth Echo is not a membership organization but Mr. Cousteau strongly recommends joining the Ocean Conservancy. Educating children is a prime focus of Earth Echo and Mr. Cousteau also recommends the National Environmental Education Foundation.

Water - a Necessity of Life

Alistair Morrison, MA (Stockholm, Sweden), Coordinator of Global Water Governance Projects, United Nations Development Program.

Sharon interviewed Mr. Morrison, who was in Stockholm, Sweden, attending World Water Week. He is involved with the International Water Institute in Stockholm and has traveled all over the world to water problem areas such as Pakistan and Mozambique.

He states that the key risk in floods is sanitation and water borne diseases such as cholera. The situation in Pakistan is made much worse because Al Quaida won’t let foreign aid workers in. So the biggest problem is not collecting or organizing aid but delivering it on the ground to the neediest people.

World Water Week has developed what they call “Millenium Development Goals.” The objective is to halve the number of people with unsatisfactory water, which is now over one billion out of a world population of 6.7 billion. Five million people die annually from poor sanitation.

There was some discussion of tube wells, which are inexpensive and less prone to contamination. Alistair noted that in areas without electric without power, especially Africa, they are now installing “round-about” pumps on wells, powered by a children’s playground merry-go-round. When the children play, the pump pumps.

In many areas of the world, women and children spend 5 to 6 hours a day carrying water, time that could be used far more productively. And often, the water is not safe. It has been suggested that with a simple faucet at every door, societies could be transformed, education improved, the status of women elevated, and disease and infant mortality reduced.

According to Morrison, water and sanitation are the #1 global problem. For every dollar invested in sanitation, there is a nine-fold return in health, productivity, economic development, tourism and fisheries. In the nation of Liberia, which has 3 million people, the entire investment of the national government in development of sanitation facilities is $25,000.

Earth has the water, Sharon notes. And it could be there forever. But water and sanitation must be a priority and never taken for granted.

In Pakistan, there is enough water but it is dirty because of cultural influences. In many countries, water policy laws are adequate but not enforced.

Not polluting in the first place is far less expensive than cleaning up after.

What is Morrison’s vision for the world, with respect to water? Improved access to safe water and sanitary facilities, one of the Millenium goals, could produce a tremendous leap forward. The solution is not complicated or even that expensive, says Morrison, but it requires education, commitment and prioritizing.

He has seen children die in hospitals because they did not have clean water.

And after the water problem is solved? People can make bed nets to protect against malaria. Or spend more time with their children. In the US, many poor seniors do not have good water.

In England, the Thames River was cleaned up only when the smell began to bother members of the House of Parliament.

In China, there has been tremendous progress. China has some very moist areas, some extremely dry areas and huge rivers flowing down from the Himalayas. Their reliance on dams creates other problems but it is an important step.

In Japan, water is a high priority and has been for decades. They are also doing well. The Japanese have a long history of proactive and intensive management.

In Indonesia, three years after the tsunami, there are still a million homeless, with inadequate water, sanitation, shelter, food or medical care. Cholera is rampant. Relief needs to be sustained for many years.

Sweden has an outstanding water management infrastructure and the Stockholm Water Prize is a highly coveted global award.

World Water Week is an annual meeting in Stockholm of 2,500 water professionals who conduct meetings and seminars, and give reports for improving the world’s water supply.

Marine Geology, Climate and Sea Level

Guest: Mahlon C. Kennicutt II, PhD (College Station, TX), Professor of Oceanography, Texas A and M University. “The effect of oceans on human life.”

Dr. Kennicutt is a professor of oceanography at Texas A and M University with a specialty in oceans and climate change.

If Earth’s climate warms and the polar ice melts, he says, seal levels could rise and over several decades, they could rise substantially. He believes that greenhouse gases from human activity (cars and factories) are affecting Earth’s thermostat. These pollutants are quickly distributed over the globe and carry trapped energy which tends to melt ice.

Sharon asked if protection of terrestrial fresh water sources (other than polar ice) would be prudent. Dr. Kennicutt noted that rising temperatures would create more climatic extremes, with some areas wetter and some dryer. As is Pakistan, there would be extended droughts followed by violent floods. In wet areas, drought periods would be longer and closer together. So the answer is yes, absolutely. It is also wise to create diversion and runoff channels in dry areas.

There was considerable discussion of air humidity, and both Dr. Kennicutt and Sharon agreed that indoor, climate controlled air is usually too dry. It was noted that drought affects evaporation into the air but that most of the air’s humidity comes from the ocean. The warmer the temperature, the more water will vaporize, thus increasing the humidity.

The Earth has a fixed amount of water, most of which originated from the condensation of volatile gases as the Earth cooled four billion years ago. Global warming, however, could drastically change the balance between atmosphere, precipitation, oceans and ice sheets.

Will the changing balance be detrimental? According to Dr. Kennicutt, humans tend to occupy the margins, where land and water meet (50% of Earth population lives within 50 miles of an ocean and much of the rest live near lakes or rivers). Changes in sea level, increasing desertification, etc. could drastically impact human populations.

However, it is predicted that Earth’s carrying capacity for humans is about nine billion people (it is currently at 6.7 billion). Climate change could cause massive population migrations leading to conflict and starvation as resources become scarce and infrastructure becomes outdated.

Sharon noted that if you solved the water problem, everything else should fall into place.
Sharon asked about waves. Dr. Kennicutt explained that waves are caused by the moon’s tidal pull and by wind, which sets up rising and falling swells. As they near the shore, the waves eventually hit bottom and fall over themselves.

According to Dr. Kennicutt, one danger of global warming has to do with the effect of changes in the mean temperature of the ocean. This could have a huge impact on weather patterns and terrestrial life but also on marine ecosystems, which feeds a large percentage of the world population. When an environmental change exceeds the ability of an organism to respond, you get a “dead zone,” where there is no life and no oxygen in the water.

Many fertilizers used on land are extremely polluting when they reach the ocean. Crops deplete soil nutrients (such as phosphorous and nitrogen) and farmers must put it back in order to keep growing crops. But too much can accumulate as runoff in the ocean. The result is a proliferation of organisms that eventually depletes the oxygen.

Regarding the gulf oil spill, Dr. Kennicutt notes that it is impossible to eliminate all human error. At the time of the interview, he said that the spill is stabilizing and will be cleaned up, although skimming and disbursing chemicals only affect a small percentage of the spill. He also points out that far more oil spills into the ocean around Nigeria annually than was released in the

Evolutionary Consciousness and the Healing of Our World

Guest : Effie Chow, PhD, from the East-West Academy of Healing Arts.
Original airdate: July 20th, 2010

Dr. Effie Chow is a PhD acupuncturist and health practitioner who specializes in the integration of Western and traditional Chinese medicine. Her background is in nursing and she is a former member of the US Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. She has been combining Western and Chinese medicine for over 40 years.

Her special emphasis is the importance of water to health. Humans are 70% water and without it, they would die within a day or two. The percentage of water is the same as the percentage of water covering the Earth’s surface.

A basis for Dr. Chow’s healing arts is the “Law of Five Elements” in Wu Xing philosophy. The five elements are wood, fire, water, metal and earth. Each represents a body part, mood or aspect of the universe. The relationships between elements are used to study or model the relationships between natural phenomena. Dr. Chow believes that every part of every human represents a part of the universe and that their totality represents the universe in microcosm.

Furthermore, each human body cell is a microcosm of the individual. Cells, too, are 70% water. In this system, emotions, climate, season and time of day are all interrelated.

Dr. Chow believes that for the most part, we have the power to make ourselves well or sick. Health is within us.

Regarding water, that is what we should drink, and plenty of it. She does not recommend chlorinated, sugared, caffeinated or carbonated water. Tea should be kept to a minimum. “If you wouldn’t bathe in it, don’t drink it,” she says!

The brain is 75% to 80% water and requires even more water to process stress. Sleep and proper breathing are also important to stress management.

Dr. Chow recommends a method called “Quigong” to maximize circulation and utilize oxygen. She notes that without oxygen, you will die in 4 to 6 minutes.

How to Breathe: Use diaphragm, not shoulders (tension in the neck is a sign of poor breathing). Move diaphragm out, sit up straight. Breathe in via nose out via mouth. This will also strengthen abs.

The objective is to be united with the universe and to live in harmony with nature. Unnatural foods and additives are counter-Tao and block the flow of energy in the body. Seek a unification of body, mind and spirit.

Regarding the gulf oil spill, part of the blame is the imbalance of human activity with the natural environment. She participated in a prayer and meditation even with Deepak Chopra, Dr. Enoto and others in Louisiana. She’s not sure it worked but the leak was resolved the next day.

The point is that collective consciousness can affect physical matter and that the square root of one percent of the people can have this effect if they do it right.

Regarding death, Dr. Chow believes it is not an end and that all things are interconnected. It is a change of form, a moving on to another mission.

Macular degeneration can be caused by not enough water, poor attitude, imbalances, etc. And your attitudes affect everyone around you.

Final words: Be open minded, proactive and show concern for others. And give 8 hugs and 3 laughs a day!

Water Conservation Is Essential to Life on Earth

Show Summary - July 19th, 2010

Monologue.

Sharon welcomed the listeners and talked about the importance of water in life and life in water. She said that it is imperative for everyone to realize the importance of water, to drink plenty of water and to carry water with them if they are unsure of a water source. Dehydration, or lack of water, is out of control in our world and causes or contributes to ailments from allergies to obesity.

Guest: Ron Duncan

Ron Duncan, M.S. (Santa Cruz, CA), water engineer and writer. "No organisms can live on Earth without water."

Ron Duncan became interested in water as a geology student. He concluded that water is the world's most important resource but despite its abundance, it is not being well cared for. No life form on Earth can survive without water. Because water fills the oceans and falls from the sky, we tend to take it for granted.

46% of the people in the world lack enough water for basic sanitation. By 2050, 50% of people will experience water shortages. Worldwide, underground aquifers, where much of the accessible fresh water is stored, are being pumped dry and/or depleted by drought.

Ron is an advocate of water conservation and offers several suggestions. Sharon agreed and talked about dryland farming, which uses far less water than conventional farming.

Ron noted that there is a projected increase in jobs in water management for three reasons: (1) The "baby boomer" work force is aging. (2) The new generation is smaller than the baby boomer generation. (3) The industry is growing rapidly.

Water is currently far too inexpensive to warrant major investments in things like dams and diversion canals. Lower prices lead to increased and more frivolous use. At present, only 5% of energy comes from hydropower. Nevertheless, a huge amount of water is used in the production of energy.

70% of home water use is indoors, 30% is outdoors. Ways to conserve:

# 1.Install a modern, smaller toilet tank. "Dual flush" toilets use more water for solid waste and less for liquid waste.

# 2. Install a high efficiency showerhead to use 1/3 less water.

# 3. Install a faucet aerator, which reduces flow from 2.5 to one gallon per minute.

# 4. Purchase a front-loading washing machine, which also uses less energy.

Sharon noted that people tend to wash their clothes too often, especially bath towels. Ron talked about lawns and suggested native plants instead of grass, or lava rock or drip irrigation. He also talked about rooftop lawns in Japan that capture water, reduce runoff and cool and humidify the air. Regarding storm runoff, many runoff channels are currently heavily polluted and in some areas, it is now illegal to capture water in a rain barrel.

Categories: Ecology and the environment; global warming and climate change; water and sanitation; 2010

Water and the BP Oil Spill

Guest: Alex Prud'homme- Author and investigative journalist.

Alex Prud'homme is a freelance investigative journalist who has written in many areas, including co-authoring a book with Julia Child. He has been interested in water since following New York City's problems with pollution of the Hudson River while growing up these as a child. Manhattan, especially, has no natural creeks and very little groundwater (the other boroughs, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island, do have small natural creeks). When you drill a well in Manhattan, you hit bedrock very quickly.

Even though 100% of New York City's water is piped in, the city has some of the best drinking water in the country. The system is mostly gravity operated and the water is largely unfiltered. The city is currently updating its piping and storage capacity.

Alex believes, as does Sharon, that in the 21st century, water will become increasingly important. Safe, sanitary fresh water is becoming increasingly scarce and no organism on Earth can live without water.

Alex grew up in the Newtown Creek area of Brooklyn, where oil has been spilling into the groundwater for over a century. This is extremely underreported and has been occurring slowly over many decades. It is estimated that 17 to 30 million gallons have been spilled. The area was originally a natural wetland off the East River on which oil refineries were built in the 1880's. There are still oil refineries there today and they are still dumping or leaking oil.

In 1950, the oil in the ground ignited and still little was done. The neighborhood is now a super-fund site and there has been some cleanup but not to the extent of better publicized areas such as Love Canal.

Wetland preservation is extremely important because wetlands strain and filter the environment and help keep it clean. In the US Gulf Coast region, extensive wetlands act as a baffle for storm surges to lessen the impact of hurricanes. They are very rich in wildlife and also very fragile.

Sharon noted that humans tend to overdo things and taking water for granted is one of them. We are the blue planet whose surface is 71% water. However, only 0.3% of our vast water supply is fresh, safe to drink and unpolluted. We can live without oil but not without water.

Louisiana could have prepared for an oil disaster but the EPA would not permit it. Since nothing bad had ever happened before, they got lazy, with no contingency or worse case planning. Oil wells are very powerful and very fragile and spills have a capacity to do an amazing amount of damage as they domino up and down the economy.

Show Information for July 15th, 2010

Summary coming soon!

Topics: Water and the BP Oil Spill; Is It Safe to Drink Natural Water?

Guests: Alex Prud'homme, author and investigative journalist; Art Bernstein, writer and naturalist.

“For I Was Thirsty and You Gave Me to Drink”

Dr. Wiles is Director is Living Water International, a Christian organization that provides water to rural areas, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and South America. He began his career teaching at the college level, then became involved in missionary work. He was recruited by Living Water seven years ago.
The organization was founded in 1991, with the original intent to build churches until they discovered the terrible worldwide need for reliable and sanitary water. Since then, they have funded 7,000 wells, serving 7 million people.

Although much of their financing is by volunteer help and private donation, they also have corporate sponsors, including oil companies. Oil and water well drilling have many transferable concepts and often, in desert areas, finding water can be of greater economic importance than finding oil.

Dr. Wiles pointed out that without good water, there can be no economic development or meaningful health care. A village can get by with no electricity but must have water. Currently, one billion people in the world (of 6.8 billion) lack access to abundant and safe water. 2.8 billion lack basic sanitation (toilets and sinks).

The Living Water program involves numerous women who would otherwise spend their entire days walking to get water (usually from a contaminated source such as a river or lake) and carrying it back. Freeing women and children from this task is also a human rights issue. Women become free to involve themselves in the community and children are free to go to school. LWI also provides hygiene training (such as hand washing), training in health and sanitation and training in well maintenance and water quality monitoring (well water is less likely to be contaminated than surface water but water from deep wells can contain toxic minerals).
Sharon talked about the humidity in the air and the importance of water in oxygen absorption by the lungs and skin surface.

LWI mostly supplies hand pumps, which break frequently (there are currently over 100,000 broken hand pumps in Africa) and do not supply toilets or sinks (But it’s the first step). Currently, LWI receives ten times more requests than they can handle. They have built wells, and founded community based organizations to administer them, in over 70 countries.

In response to Sharon’s question, Dr. Wiles stated that regions with the most serious need are Sub-Saharan Africa and India. In Africa, a single hand pump can serve 500 to 5,000 people (average is 1,500). There is a well that serves 35,000 people. Their water may also be used for irrigation and by animals but the main focus by far is on human drinking water.

Sharon noted that dehydration begins at birth and that Earth’s human mission is to take care of life, health and water. She believes that to achieve this, people worldwide must work together. Water affects everybody, including health and national security. Only 1% of the world’s water is fresh, available for drinking and not tied up in ice or ground water, or used for agriculture. However, most of that 1% is polluted.

India has 1.2 billion people and not enough water. Even in places with running water, systems are non-functional for much of the day and most people who can afford it drink bottled water. Trans-national water sources are also an issue (such as China’s intent to dam the Bramhaputra River, one of India’s largest, which originates in the Himalayas). China also has major water problems and in some cities, houses have separate spigots for “utility water” and “drinkable water.”

In Kenya, the world’s largest game concentrations are threatened by increasing human population and vanishing rivers. Lake Victoria is badly polluted but probably can be reclaimed (much like the Charles River in Boston).

Sharon observed that in the Netherlands, they have been conserving and managing water for 800 years, and that the first regional governments were Dutch “Water Boards.”

Dr. Wile talked about the “Silent Tsumani” in which more people in the world are dying of water related illnesses (such as malaria and diarrhea) than any other cause. In Africa, each individual uses about 5 gallons of water per day. In the US, the number is 150 gallons per day. In poor rural areas, clean and abundant water can immediately reduce disease by 80%.

Water, Sharon and Dr. Wile agree, is truly the “universal vaccine,” although its importance in health is too often overlooked. The good news is that people can learn and change.
Final words: Become more aware of the global water crisis and then, become involved!

Website: www.water.cc.

EARTH has a secret: Embrace your life, every precious moment.
Earth is Whispering: Never say goodbye.
Leave your footprint,
Thank you for listening,
Have a nice day!

Dry Eye Syndrome among Women

Dr. Gipson is an ophthalmologist and dry eye researcher at Harvard Medical School. Dry eye symptoms are the #1 reason for eye doctor visits in the United States. She notes that dry eye syndrome is extremely complex and involves the surface of the eye, tear and lipid producing glands, the skin of the eyelids, the manner in which inflammation is processed by the brain and body, hormone production, microscopic tear film components, and the nervous system connection to the brain. Any part of this system can result in dry eye symptoms.

Two-third of dry eye sufferers are women and most are peri- or post-menopausal (although many men, including older men also get dry eye). The symptoms in women relate mostly to hormone levels and lifestyle and they do not get it simply because they are women. Women are also more prone to autoimmune diseases, which has some of the same precipitating factors as dry eye. Women also live longer so the risk of age related illness is greater.

Sharon notes that as inventive as humans are, the invention of alcohol as a beverage, smoking and the frying pan were not our finest accomplishments. One-third of cataracts are linked to smoking.

Dr. Gipson recommends dark green vegetables and adequate sleep at night. Sleeping lowers the tear film pH and restores tear film moisture. It is also generally conducive to good health.

Regarding water, in many parts of the world, it is women who draw and carry water for their families and villages. They are far more prone than men to diseases caused by drinking bad water, including trichoma, which can cause blindness. A disease called river blindness is more prevalent in men who work in the rivers.
Regarding computers, the doctor notes that deep concentration can greatly affect the eyes blink rate. A slowed blink rate increases moisture evaporation from the tear film, resulting in dry eye symptoms. Indoor conditions such as household chemicals, insulated walls and windows and forced-air heating and cooling can also cause dry eye symptoms.

Final word: Take care of your eyes through lifestyle habits and checkups. And take care of your while body, not just its parts. Because they are all interconnected.

Learn more at the Sharon Kleyne Hour website http://ping.fm/K4Hpa

Read more at the Women's Eye Health website http://ping.fm/8phDR

Natural Resource Management in India

For today's show Sharon Kleyne was joined by Ashok Jaitly (New Delhi, India), from The Energy and Resources Institute.

Their discussion was on sustainable development, land and water resource management.

India's lack of access to clean water and sanitation has resulted in a wide variety of issues. It is not in their hands to determine their longevity on Earth. So when you are unsure of the expiry date of your body you must at least make sure that by the time you finally Rest in Peace you must be able to enjoy your body and keep it at the pink of its health for a long time. Human body is taken for granted these days with poor nutrition and lack of proper exercise. People seem less concerned about their health until the time reality strikes and some really drastic health issue arises. You must learn from others’ mistakes and in this case you can take your ancestors, grandparents or parents into concern. No one really has had a perfectly healthy life unless they were God. Everyone has some or the other illness during their lifetime that effectively reduces the quality of their health and wellness and eventually lose out on certain luxuries of life in the bargain.

Just the way you tend to secure a bright future for your children and for your own old age in the form of equity, stock bonds and other investments of your hard earned money similarly you must invest a little bit of time of each day of your lives to contribute to your body in some little but effective way to provide the nurture it deserves. It will help you to huge extents in the long term and you know that too. Most often than not, people who are at the peak of their youth and seem to be very active and brimming with loads of energy never tend to take their health seriously and are succumbed to activities that are widely known to cause undesired health conditions. These might include, indulging in fast foods, fat rich foods, alcohol, smoking and other such harmful and toxic sources of ill health. What they fail to understand is their body is constantly fighting against all these to the best of its capabilities but once it reaches its saturation levels it would give up and it would be your time to fight against the stubborn diseases caused due to such ill practices. http://ping.fm/AaSbb

However, like they say, it is never too late; you could always help rejuvenate your health with plenty of aspects that can positively affect your life. A change in the lifestyle could be the first step and taking it eventually to higher levels would be advisable. Educate yourself well on how to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay away from evil indulgences. There are certain other diseases that you may not be able to avoid but you can always extend its entry into your lives by a few years and that certainly would make a huge difference to your well being. Few ways of fighting the futuristic health effects would be incorporating a healthy and nutritious diet, regular exercise, meditation or yoga for the quintessential peace of mind, detoxification that is the removal of unwanted toxins from the body, thinking positively and this mental exercise also plays a major role in your physical health. You have plenty of resources regarding the same on the vast information source of the World Wide Web or you may always listen to expert talks on the television or the radio. Make way to wellness in your lives and you are the only one who can do it.

Lessons from the Oregon Trail

Did you miss Sharon's show with F. "Have Fun in the Sun But Be Smart."

Judy Mulvihill is involved with the Shade Foundation of America, founded in 2002 by Shonda Shilling, wife of former major league pitcher, Kurt Schilling. Shonda is a skin cancer survivor and the purpose of the Foundation is to educate adults and children on sun safety. The foundation is very involved with children and has an annual K-8 poster contest. They also offer an adult self-exam DVD and many other programs. See www.shadefoundation.org.

The Foundation believes that the use of sunscreen should be as much a habit as brushing your teeth (use more if your exposure will be greater). Sharon noted that malignant melanoma is a skin cancer on the increase (most other cancers are decreasing), which she attributes to dry air and increasing solar exposure. With education and early detection, the disease is 95% preventable and 99%curable. Sharon's Save a Child's Life Foundation raises money to combat melanoma in children.

Dr. Saini is a specialist in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a procedure to remove skin cancers. It was invented in the 1960's as a way to remove the cancer lesion and get an almost instantaneous pathogenic analysis to help surgeons know if they removed the entire growth so they won't have to go in a second time. Tumors are also biopsied prior to surgery.

Sharon noted that it is important to teach patients to educate themselves and check their skin periodically for changes. She observed that not all skin cancers are large and pigmented and they do not all occur in sun-exposed areas.

According to Dr. Saini, there are three kinds of skin cancers:

1. Basal cell carcinoma presents as a pale lump that does not spread (metastasize).
2. Squamous cell carcinoma presents as an oozing or crusty patch that also does not metastasize.
3. Malignant melanoma presents as a large, dark growth that very much does metastasize and which can be fatal.
4. (Note: Some types of malignant sarcoma may appear as skin growths but are considered cancers of the connective tissue, not the skin. They do very much metastasize. See www.wikipedia.com.)

Dr. Saini explained that skin cancers start in the skin's dermis, or lower layer and are usually not visible for some time, until they invades the epidermis, or outer layer.

Sharon wondered if there was a demonstrated correlation between dry skin, insufficient water intake and skin cancer. Dr. Saini said that such a link was suspected but not proven.

It was noted that fair skinned people have a higher incidence of skin cancer and that there is definitely a genetic predisposition. It is theorized that Oregon has an unusually high skin cancer rate because it has a lot of fair skinned people.

There was a lengthy discussion of sun protection. It is important for everyone always but far more important if you are fair skinned and/or spending a day at the beach (or have a family history of skin cancer). Sharon noted that many indoor conditions can dry and weaken the skin and make you more vulnerable and that you should apply sunscreen after every bath or shower (and drink lots of water).

Dr. Saini recommended sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection, and sunscreens based on titanium or zinc dioxide rather than chemical formulations because they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. She stressed that the use of sunscreen should not give you license to spend hours in the sun and that tanning is never good for you. Babies especially should be shielded from the sun.

The best protection: Drink plenty of water, cover up and wear sunglasses and hats.

The National Skin Cancer Foundation is in its 30th year and, among other things, sponsors a nationwide program of skin cancer screening in a motor home, underwritten by Rite-Aid. They have so far screened 3,000 people. They may be reached at www.skincancer.org.

Sharon asked about ocular melanoma, which can cause blindness or death. She believes that chronic dry eye and/or chronic eye irritation can contribute to ocular melanoma (which is caused by chronic inflammation, usually associated with dry eye). Ocular melanoma is on the rise and can cause blindness or death. Annual full body examinations of the skin should always include the eyes (other eye problems besides melanoma can arise from chronic dry eye).

Final words: Each year, on your birthday, give yourself a full skin examination head to toe.

Upcoming Show-September 14, 2009

September 14, 2009

Keeping Your Eyes Healthy While Using Computers
Larry Wan, MD (San Jose, CA).
